End of the month…

Saturday, May 31st, 2014

This month has flown by, can’t believe it is June tomorrow. I signed up for an online course last night, which I will add details of in the next few days – it looks great, can’t wait to start it. I am planning this year to do several courses, I have so much more to learn and more recently have connected with fellow designers, which is so great as freelancing can be a lonely existence!

A couple of new things to show, several quick drawings from my sketchbook….

I scanned in my cameras from the previous post and added fills with patterns and colours. I like the fact this has given the original drawings a whole new look..

Finally a montage of images from this month! Summer is nearly here, I hope, it hasn’t felt like it this week!

It has been an aim of mine for a while to keep a sketchbook, I’m always drawing/doodling and getting ideas on paper for both my freelance work and my own personal work. Bought myself a new book yesterday so I will try and do something in it every day. My first page was inspired by a window display I saw yesterday in Manchester, it was full of old vintage cameras, lovely shapes, lines and colours. I often feel inspired to have a sketchbook when looking through my students books at work, so I hope this will be something I continue with.. here is the the first page..

Pinterest finds..

I came across some really lovely pinners recently. Yeline Rico has an extensive collection of boards all of which are really muted and such a sophisticated selection of imagery, a definite one to follow. Also really nice to see some of my work in amongst some of the boards. I really like when you find a collection of boards that all follow a style or palette I think it really gives you an insight in to someones tastes and preferences.

further ideas…

Whilst working today I was still getting distracted by experimenting with some of the elements of my competition entry, these could work as little stickers or stamps…?? now need to find another competition to enter!

Umbrella prints trimmings competition…

Sunday, May 25th, 2014

A while ago I bought myself a packet of fabric trimmings from Umbrella trimmings for their annual competition. I have seen entries over the years and have always admired the fabrics and prints so thought it would be a great opportunity to try and have a go at creating something.

I started on a few ideas quite a while ago, initially thinking I would make something from the actual samples which seems the obvious thing to do. Tested a few things out and as per usual couldn’t make a decision! I chose to scan the fabric samples in and began to use them on screen within my illustrations.

These are the initial scans of the fabric samples, which I actually really liked, I often scan in fabric and use for textures etc within my freelance work.

Here is also a picture of the original fabric samples that were sent originally, really liked this pack, always drawn to green and loved the dark green fabric in particular

So then I worked on selecting sections of a simple (quite random) sketch that I had done in my sketchbook .

From this I then got quite carried away…. I thought it would be nice to show these ideas as a set of prints – true to my background as a surface pattern designer I tend to always see things as repeated motifs. So I mocked up a board showing my repeated designs of which are all icons from the original illustration and showed how these may appear on a series of items like clothing and stationary. Have to admit I could of carried on with this, It got quite addictive! I made lots of prints all of which include the scanned in prints either within the shapes and as backgrounds. Was really nice to work on something with no boundaries and I’m really pleased with how this has turned out!

Here is my final board!

And these further boards just show the prints just on dresses and on their own.

Finally some of the all over prints…

Looking forward to seeing the other entries!

Typography, frames and deadlines…

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

Had such a productive spell with my work, great to get really involved in my design work and working under pressure normally helps. This month is flying by so many things on the go but love being busy. I often find that one idea leads to another and I almost don’t know where to start.

Experimenting a lot with hand drawn typography, I always recall really enjoying hand rendered text when I was younger and much prefer creating my own type to  standard digital fonts. Instagram is a great way to experiment with photography and composition and I find its really inspirational as you get little snippets of peoples days and the majority of people I follow are illustrators, makers, surface pattern designers etc.

Sketched some floral based frame ideas and selected a mixture of icons to put in them, think that these could work as small framed prints.

Love that at this time of the year all design studios/designers release their Surtex flyers. So many nice examples, great mix of typography and images, I have a whole board dedicated to show flyers on pinterest. Here are some of my favourites..

Waiting for my scanner..

Thursday, May 8th, 2014

Sometimes my scanner has a mind of its own and decides to make me wait, so whilst it was doing its thing I did this …

Busy with lots of things at the moment, trying to give as much as I can to my freelance work. Have a pile of things on my desk to finish – did squeeze in a bit of time t0 create these though, enjoy just doing work that is just spontaneous and for nothing specific..
