A bit of progress…

Sunday, March 30th, 2014

Managed to get some things on the way to be made, cut out lots in the last few days and got some things ready to put together – here is where my mum comes in, she is the one who does all the complicated lined purses etc, I don’t really have the patience for that bit!

Mothers day this weekend, the clocks went forward so light evenings to come – which I love – more daylight to work in! I got a great card from my eldest son, really sweet drawings – and in French, I was impressed.

Next plan – Etsy shop…

The weekend

Monday, March 24th, 2014

I have been multitasking, primarily looking after my two boys but managed to fit in some design work and some making. Continuing to experiment with small samples and new ideas. I bought some new fabric on Friday which generally makes me want to use them for something. Also been tempted by some new fabric remnant packs which are on the way in the post, so eager to see what arrives!I have come up with a simple cat shape, still keen to include some text…

Also a new owl with long legs…

Have a pile of bird shapes cut out and ready to make purses etc, again trying to simplify my shapes!

I have followed lots of designers and makers on Facebook over the years so again keen to get my name out there, reached a 100 likes at the weekend, although it appears the free marketing on Facebook may be over, noticed a lot of the business pages are complaining that their updates and posts are not being seen, I think Facebook are controlling a big percentage of what is seen and are encouraging paid advertising, which I guess was bound to happen. Anyway I will still use, also now on twitter and instagram so these will also help raise my profile!

Lastly (sorry I’m rambling…) I inherited a lovely tea set from my Grandma, who sadly i never met, but still nice to have something as by way of remembering her. It is lovely pale yellow and green design with very delicate cups. I think it looks like art deco not exactly sure when it dates back to?

Busy day

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

Had a productive day, firstly I received a couple of packs of off cut fabrics from Umbrella Prints which is a textile company based in Australia that sell really lovely printed fabrics. For several years now they have been running a trimmings competition (all details on their blog ) the task is to use their offcuts in whatever format you want. I ordered two packs but as you can only use one I will need to choose, I think I will probably use the one with the green print, have no idea as yet what to make but really looking forward to having a go!

Secondly today I packaged up a box of my handmade accessories, they are off to a local gallery shop which is quite exciting as I have only ever sold my work through fairs etc. Will be interesting to see how things go and possibly something i’d like to do more of. Most of the work I sent was my existing stock with a few new pieces, hoping to streamline my ideas and start selling online. Below is the box full of stock and some new additions!

Trying out new ideas

Monday, March 17th, 2014

Received some new fabric samples from littelteawagon, always nice to work with new colours and new patterns. I’m not normally a fan of yellow but actually quite liking the yellow, got some new ideas for stitched motifs and text. I’m currently working on a batch of work that will be on sale in a local shop soon, which is a first!

Sewing

Wednesday, March 12th, 2014

Had a productive day stitching some new ideas and making some new stock, would like to include some text within my work so have been experimenting with free motion stitching so I can easily control some text. I would really like to get some of my work printed for maybe postcards/prints to frame, I think seeing them photographed make me think they could translate to print well, something else for the never ending to do list……

Blue skies

Monday, March 10th, 2014

Spring feels like it is here, noting the blue skies I captured yesterday. Working on my surface pattern designs today but also have started to collate some of my stitched work together in some montages.

I’d like a cat,

I grew up with cats, would love a cat, a stripy one in preference, just one small fluffy cat would do……..

Homework….

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

My son seems to be getting more and more homework, most of which requires a lot of help… from me. He had to keep a food diary and decorate it with drawings of thing he had eaten. So I was helping him with some simple line drawings, whilst I was waiting and watching him carefully colour in (over the lines I had faintly drawn!) I was sketching away, which then led me to create this pattern.

March

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

Nice to see the start of the March, particularly after the wet soggy winter we have just had! Just a few weeks to go till the clocks go forward meaning lighter evenings which I love as generally I work in the evenings and it always helps when you can still work in daylight.

I am fully enthused to start making again and have spent time sorting out my fabrics and have been thinking of a new set of ideas to bring to my work, found a little fox in and amongst my piles of fabrics (I have ALOT of fabric) and would like to try and design some new motifs. I used to make a lot of children’s bags, (see below) either for friends children, for presents etc and over the years I have sold quite a lot at christmas markets. At the start of the year I set myself an aim to open a small etsy shop, so I need to find time to come up with a small collection which I can sell online.

Owls

Saturday, March 1st, 2014

Owls seem to of been a constant theme in surface pattern and kids design for a number of years now. I never tire of drawing owls and they continue to be a feature of both my Illustrations and stitched work.
